When Annie Sloan developed her unique decorative paint, Chalk Paint™, over 30 years ago, she revolutionised the world of decorative painting. Frustrated with the lack of paint options available at the time, she created her signature paint with its remarkable versatility and ease of use for everyone from the novice to the professional to enjoy.
Annie Sloan developed her now famous decorative paint, Chalk Paint™, in 1990 to answer the need she had for a versatile paint that would have many uses from acting like limewash to looking like old painted furniture.
She called it Chalk Paint™ because of its beautiful velvety, matt finish.
“One of the great aspects about my paint is the number of different ways it can be used – it is not a one dimensional paint but can be used thickly, thinly, crackled, stippled, overlaid and rubbed through, smoothly, and like gesso.”
Chalk Paint™ decorative paint by Annie Sloan is very easy to work with. It very rarely requires any preparation, such as sanding or priming, and can be used indoors or outside on just about any surface from wood to metal, and matt plastic to terracotta. It can revitalise old furniture, walls, ceilings, and floors with ease. It’s easy, fun, and makes amazing results accessible to everyone.
“There’s no need for tiresome priming and sanding you can get straight to the fun bit!” Annie Sloan
With a colour palette inspired by 18th and 20th Century décor and design, you can easily mix the colours together to extend the range. Add a little water to it to make it smooth, thicken it up by leaving the lid off, and make it into a wash by adding even more water. Use flat brushes for a smooth look or bristle brushes for a more textured aged look. Gorgeous results have never been so simple and straightforward.
Chalk Paint™ is eco-friendly too. It contains extremely low volatile organic compounds (‘VOCs’) and has no odour.
Annie Sloan Soft Wax is the perfect partner for Chalk Paint™. Soft Wax is used for protection and durability and to give a beautiful mellow finish to painted furniture, cabinets, and walls.
You can easily apply one or two coats of Soft Wax with a brush or cloth. It has the consistency of soft margarine and has very little odour.
Soft Wax combines two of the purest and hardest natural waxes available carnauba wax and beeswax. It’s available in Clear and Dark formulations, and can be further coloured with Chalk Paint™. Soft Wax is water-repellent too.
Annie recommends distressing Chalk Paint™ by applying Soft Wax, then sanding.

Annie Sloan Lacquer is quick drying, non-toxic, has very little odour, and is non-yellowing. This strong water-based floor lacquer is made specifically to cover Chalk Paint™ perfect for wood or concrete surfaces. It gives a beautiful matt finish with a slight sheen for added strength.
Annie Sloan’s unique Craqueleur is a two-part application that gives an authentic cracked varnish finish just like on an Old Master! You can control the size of the cracks with Step 2 the thinner you apply it, the smaller the cracks. If you like, you can then highlight the cracks with Annie Sloan Dark Soft Wax.
Decoupage Glue and Varnish
Annie Sloan Decoupage Glue and Varnish is water-based, fast drying, and builds up layers very quickly. For fast and beautiful results, you can use it as an adhesive for decoupage or to transfer a laser-printed or photocopied image directly onto a surface. Easy to apply, this glue and varnish gives a beautifully smooth, matt finish.
Size is an old English word for glue. Annie Sloan Gold Size is water based and has the advantage of staying sticky when dry, so it’s perfect for applying either bronze powders or metal leaf quickly and easily.
Pure Bristle Brushes
As well as being perfect for painting with Chalk Paint™, Annie Sloan’s oval Pure Bristle Brushes are excellent for applying Soft Wax. These Pure Bristle Brushes are particularly good for achieving texture on the surface. They also give you the freedom to express yourself, as they take lots of paint, and are comfortable and easy to work with. Annie’s Pure Bristle Brushes come in three sizes: Small, Medium and Large.
“These type of brushes have always been my favourite as they allow you to paint expressively as the bristle is strong and firm but pliable.” Annie Sloan
